Audi A3 S Line

So we took the keys to an Audi A3 S Line. Yeah, it's not as race-ready as the Europe-only 2-door S3, but the A3 S Line is still a damn fine automobile and we're glad that we Yanks can get it.

Our A3 S Line came equipped with pretty much every bell and whistle Audi offers. The A3 S Line's standard transmission is the six-speed DSG, and Audi's famed Quattro system sends the power from the 250 horsepower/236 lb.-ft. torque 3.2-liter narrow angle V6 out through all four wheels. Our car is also equipped with Audi's MultiMedia Interface (MMI) command center, heated leather seats with special stitching, Bose Symphony audio system and more. While you may be able to find many of these accoutrements on the standard 3.2, only the S Line will have the special things like the unique roof spoiler, front lip spoiler, fog lights and special badging.

New Audi TT Photos and Info

Last night Audi snuck a press release and dozens of photos of its hot new TT coupe across the wires. As evident by the photos, this is a completely redesigned model from the previous generation, with plenty of new performance goodies for sports car fans. The rakish looks don't hurt either.

There will be two engine choices: the base 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that's impressed us in the Audi A4 and A3, and, for those who want a bit more, a 3.2-liter V-6 that brings 50 additional horsepower to the table. The V-6 will also come with Audi's Quattro all wheel drive.

Expect the TT to appear in showrooms in early 2007. For now check out 13 more photos, including interior shots and three different exterior colors, after the link.

Audi A3 wows; price tag doesn't

A udis keep getting better, from the "entry-level" A3 to the top-of-the-line S8. They also keep getting more expensive.

Case in point: Our 2007 A3 3.2 Quattro S line, which carried a price tag of $42,300. You understand why we put the term "entry-level" in quotes.

Outside of the jaw-dropping sticker and a few quibbles, there isn't much to dislike about the A3 3.2 Quattro.

SHE: OK, just let me get this out of the way, so we can heap lots of praise on the A3. But didn't you tell me this compact five-door hatchback shares its basic running gear with the Volkswagen Rabbit? And doesn't the Rabbit start at just over $15,000? I really love the A3, but I'm having trouble figuring out where Audi put that extra $27,000.

HE: I don't have an answer that will satisfy frugal shoppers.

Audi adds 2007 RS 4 as new performance compact sedan

German luxury carmaker Audi AG is cranking up its racy, sporty side in a surprising way -- by giving its smallest sedan a 420-horsepower V-8 and a manual transmission. The new-for-2007 RS 4 is faster than any other car in Audi's introductory A4 line of sedans and wagons, including the previous top sporty model, the Audi S4.

In fact, the Audi RS 4 is faster -- going from 0 to 60 miles an hour in just 4.8 seconds -- than even Audi's flagship large sedan, the A8, with its V-8 or 12-cylinder engine, according to Audi performance statistics.Turning a compact, four-door car into a stunning sports car puts Audi and its RS 4 performance experts at quattro GmbH in Germany in some rarefied company.German carmaker BMW sells a 2007 BMW M5, for example, that's a mid-size sedan with a 500-horsepower, V-10 engine.

Ricardo Unveils Next Step in Automotive Safety

VAN BUREN TWP., Mich., Dec. 11, 2006 -- Delegates at Berlin's 5th International Car Training Institute (CTI) Symposium, "Innovative Automotive Transmissions," were given the opportunity to be the first to experience Ricardo's new Cross-Axle Torque Vectoring(TM) demonstrator.

Based on an Audi A6 4.2l V8 Quattro Avant, the vehicle is fitted with the latest generation of Ricardo's Torque Vectoring technology that enables moment-by-moment redistribution of drive-torque in response to driver demand, vehicle speed and road conditions. In doing so, it enables the vehicle to follow the driver's intended path, ultimately leading to a potentially safer, more enjoyable driving experience.

The design of the Torque Vectoring unit is highly compact and can be contained with very limited intrusion into an existing differential packaging envelope.

BMW

Here's a video of BMW's all-wheel-drive system, the xDrive, at work. There's a lot of sliding, but the xDrive does a pretty good job considering the icy conditions the vehicles are in. Although with the sliding, it still seems to remain traction and does not fall too far off the road. The question now is: is it good enough to compete with the legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive from Audi? Read Article .

Audi Q7: Watch out for all those options!

Audi was a late arrival at the SUV party with its Q7 but luckily for the four-ringed brand the shindig is showing no signs of ending given the continuing popularity of such go-anywhere luxury behemoths. Audi's cute Q7 catchphrase reads: "For 25 years Audi has created quattro for its cars. Now, it's created a car for quattro." The question is whether it offers anything new or innovative in the SUV game. I think it has more exuberant styling than the typical blob-shaped SUV, particularly at the front with its super-sized, gnashing oval grille. It looks like a super-sized RS4 .

2007 Audi A8L Test Drive

The A8L is a long-wheelbase version of Audi's aluminum-bodied executive sedan. A 4.2 liter, 40-valve 350 hp V-8 combines with a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and Quattro permanent all-wheel drive for scintillating performance (0-60 in 5.8 seconds). Standard comfort, convenience and safety features include an intuituive multi-media interface that controls nearly everything from the sound system to driver-selected suspension settings. EPA mileage 18/25, price as tested: $93,450.

Top ten cars for 2006

This has been a hell of a year for new car introductions, with as many as four a week being launched onto the SA market (with the exception of Auto Africa, where about 50 new cars saw the light of day).

Choosing our top 10 has been no easy task.

Audi RS4

However choosing the winner was no problem at all. Without doubt the closest thing on the road to an out-and-out competition car is the Audi RS4.

This monster machine has a 309 kW V8 engine producing monstrous power, allied to quattro four-wheel drive and the best brakes we have ever sampled.

The RS4 can jet from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 16.6 seconds. It's electronically limited to 250 km/h.

It looks racy too and the RS4 comes with beefy wheel-arches, flashy wheels, and pumped-up shark-like spoiler gills which give it a pimped look.
