Can you guess the best-selling luxury cars?
Visitors to BMW's Web site might be surprised to see how outdated some of the models in the company's high-volume 3 Series range look. That's because, though the automaker started selling a new-generation, overhauled 3 Series sedan a year and a half ago, 3 Series convertible, hot-rod M3 coupe and convertible models are several years old. 2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
Ferrari borrowing from Chevrolet? It has to be a first. Maybe "borrowing" is too strong a word. "Sharing" is probably more accurate. We're talking about the new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano's suspension system and its use of Magneto-rheological (MR) shocks. They allow split-second adjustments by controlling an electrical current which flows through the fluid in the shock absorbers. It's a high-tech answer to an old problem, and one of the first production cars to use it was the 2003 Chevrolet Corvette (the Cadillac STS was the other). Ferrari claims the MR suspension system gives the new 599 a safer and more enjoyable driving experience by reducing roll and improving cornering grip. GM made similar claims back in 2003. The traction and stability control system in the 599 is also similar to another Corvette system which has been around for awhile.
The Good: Sharp looks, cabin quality and comfort, techno wizardry ...
Audi's new Q7 is very late to the luxury SUV party. So late, in fact, it's more likely showing up to an after-party where other manufacturers have had years to tailor and refine their offerings. But Audi has managed to make the best of its tardiness, and the Q7 is startlingly fresh and well positioned to make its mark in a crowded field.
For years, during the late 1990s and early 2000s, Audi held out, offering as an alternative its excellent, rugged all-road station wagon. Executives now admit that was a big mistake, estimating that as much as 15% of its customer base abandoned the brand for lack of a standard SUV. Even Subaru and Volvo, brands that made highly regarded wagons, began offering full-on SUVs during that time period.
Now, Audi's top brass (which reports to parent company Volkswagen) wants the brand to roll with the big boys instead of occupying a narrow niche.
Domestic news
Toyota's locally-built Aurion V6 has been named Australia's best large car, with the new VE Holden Commodore finishing third in the awards presented by the nation's combined motoring clubs.
Two diesels and a hybrid were also winners in the Australia's Best Cars Awards, heralding a breakthrough for models powered by alternative fuels.
On sale for just over a month, the judges praised the Aurion as a well-rounded package of technology and refinement.
"The Aurion is the new cat that Toyota has set among the established pigeons," said chief judge Ernest Litera.
"Toyota has produced a big six that has managed to outstrip traditional rivals in the Australian market."
The Best Cars judges said the Aurion showed Toyota had finally taken Australian large cars seriously enough to produce a sedan worthy of praise.

Brabus goes mad, tunes Mercedes-Benz Sprinter!
Well, we've finally seen everything (or at least everything up to this week). Brabus, the German tuner whose specialty is finding ways to make Mercedes-Benz products move more rapidly than the factory engineers ever intended, has tuned the Sprinter. You know the Sprinter. It's DaimlerChrysler's tall commercial van that can be found sporting Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, or Freightliner badging as it performs its everyday duties. Those usually involve delivering packages to businesses, people to airports, and the like. In the press release included after the jump, you'll read of tuning kits for both diesel and gasoline versions of the ungainly-looking machine. We'll focus on the power package for the gasoline V6, whose displacement is increased from 3.5 to 4.0 liters, and which belts out a post-Brabus 310 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Affordable Ferrari?
Before our eagle-eyed readers start firing letters off to our editors, let us be clear that we know the Enzo is the fastest and most powerful sports car ever to emerge from the house that Enzo Ferrari built. That said, if you're talking "reasonable" price and "high" volume - all relative terms, of course - it would likely be hard to beat the new F599 GTB Fiorano, the long-awaited replacement for the 575M Maranello.
Hard as it might imagine, the new sports coupe might actually qualify as a daily driver, as a factory team set out to demonstrate by driving a pair of F599s all the way from the far end of Brazil all the way to New York City, where they wrapped up the Panamerica 20,000 earlier this month.
The sleek shape of the new coupe sweeps from the low, aggressive nose across a bulging hoodline, and back to its broad, rear fenders.
