BMW Extends Adoption of MOST(R) Multimedia Networking Technology to X5, R56 MINI & 3 Series Coupe Models

SMSC (Nasdaq: SMSC) today announced that its Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST®) networking technology has been selected as part of the infotainment systems for the recently launched BMW X5, R56 MINI and 3 Series Coupe platforms. The launch of MOST on the X5 represents the first full featured OEM implementation of SMSC's new Intelligent Network Interface Controller (INIC) architecture, designed to simplify the design of robust MOST based network nodes. MOST is the infotainment network in over 40 vehicle platforms on the road today.

This INIC solution is a complete system-on-chip, leveraging SMSC's MOST NetServices network driver to set up a MOST interface, which provides network stability independent from potential misbehavior of external applications. In addition, it provides easy access to all data transportation mechanisms on a MOST Network.

Autos Insider Sneak Peek

Chrysler wants to stretch out the life cycle of its current Dodge Dakota pickup. So the U.S. arm of DaimlerChrysler AG will give the midsize Dakota an extensive face-lift for model year 2008, prior to a full redesign in 2012. The Dodge brand continues to evolve a new family face, with the '08 Dakota drawing styling inspiration, including the brand's signature cross-bar grille from the Nitro and the Charger. Dodge will start building the Dakota in fall 2007.

Crash kills boy on way to open presents

LAUDERHILL - A 5-year-old boy on the way to open a Christmas present at his grandmother's house died in a road accident Sunday night when the car he was riding in struck a pickup truck, projecting the youngster into the exploding airbag and windshield, police said.

"This is a very tragic accident for the holidays," Lauderhill Police spokeswoman Lt. Tundra King said. "This is unfortunately something that didn't have to happen if the child was restrained."

King said Keon Harden was sitting on his mother's lap in the front seat of a Toyota Camry being driven by his father. Just after 6 p.m., in the southbound lanes of North State Road 7 in the 1200 block, the Camry hit a Dodge Dakota from behind, sending it into the back of a Lincoln Town Car.

The badly injured Keon, of Hollywood, was taken to Broward General Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Spy Photos: 2008 Dodge Dakota

Straightline's got a picture of what they're claiming is the new Dodge Dakota, refreshed for the 2008 model year. Although the Dakota no longer shares a platform with the Durango, the Ram-brand's full-size SUV, you can definitely see where it's taking styling cues from another Dodge product, the Nitro. Yup, it's got that same grille that only a mother could love -- a blind mother that is. But at least, according to Straightline, you'll be able to drive blind ol' mom around with a bit more power as they're claiming the mid-size will receive an upgrade to the new 4.0-liter V6 as the base engine configuration -- plus some power boosts for those with the bank to step into a truck with V8 power. – Ray Wert

Spy Shots: 2008 Dodge Dakota

Although Dodge made a few changes to the midsize Dakota pickup for 2007, it looks like bigger changes are in store for '08. With spy shots by Brenda Priddy in hand, Edmund's Straighline is speculating that the recently updated 3.7L V-6 will be replaced by Chrysler's 4.0L unit and that the existing 4.7L V-8s will simply get a few extra ponies. Besides the engine changes, this freshened Dakota features a more rounded and chrome-laden grille, new headlamps and relocated badge. Even more importantly, however, the new Dakota will see some much-needed changes on the inside as well. For a bigger version of our "after" picture, follow the Read link. The Bee's Best Bets: A ton of trucks

Pickup trucks were once a red-white-and-blue paradise -- very much an American vehicle produced almost exclusively by American automakers.

Times have changed.

How else to explain the dread and fear that U.S. auto companies are feeling about the reworked 2007 Toyota Tundra, which will start showing up in dealerships in early 2007?
