Refreshed X3 holds the sport-ute high ground

WHEN it comes to sport-utes, my dad is what could be called "old school," and that's no dig at his 80 years on this planet. It's just that he started driving SUVs when there was no sport to them, only utility -- discovering the superior traction of Jeeps during his stint in the Canadian army during the Second World War. And, for the next 40 years, numerous Jeeps of various size and description graced his driveway.

So, when he opined that the optional sport suspension on the BMW X3 was "silly," I wasn't surprised. To Dad, sport-utes (or, in BMW's case, sport activity vehicles) are rough and tough. They don't have handling characteristics similar to those of a first-class sports sedan.

Despite my dad's disdain, some SUVs and car-based crossovers are taking on similar performance characteristics to their automotive brethren.

Caliber leads Euro-invasion

BELVIDERE, Ill. - The "Anything But Cute" Dodge Caliber is not just DaimlerChrysler's attempt to reinvent itself in the small-car market in the United States. It's the lead car in the company's attempt to introduce Dodge to the world.

Since making its debut on U.S. dealer lots early this year, salespeople have sold 75,791 of the aggressive-looking, sporty coupe/SUVs. Those are solid numbers, especially considering the car didn't make it to all lots until March. Still, the Caliber's numbers are behind the 110,370 Dodge Neons sold through the first 10 months of 2005.

All-New 2007 Dodge Nitro Features Gentex Auto-Dimming Mirror

ZEELAND, Mich., Dec. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gentex Corporation, the leading supplier of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors to the worldwide automotive industry, has announced that it is supplying auto-dimming mirrors for the all-new 2007 Dodge Nitro mid-size SUV.

A base interior Gentex mirror is standard on the Nitro SLT and R/T trim levels. The mirror can be upgraded to include U-Connect(TM), Chrysler Group's hands-free communication system.

Gentex auto-dimming mirrors automatically darken to reduce glare from the headlamps of vehicles approaching from the rear. The brighter the glare, the darker the mirrors become, making nighttime driving safer.

"Midsize SUVs and crossover vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, and that's what makes this an important program for us," said Enoch Jen, Gentex senior vice president and chief financial officer.

2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4

Believe it or not, Dodge's initial plans for the Caliber hatchback didn't call for an SRT version. This wouldn't be shocking if you didn't know the history of the previous SRT4. Turns out when the original Neon SRT4 was built, Dodge figured it could sell around 12,000 or so if things went just right. It sold twice that number. Why that wasn't enough to convince Dodge to build an SRT version of the Neon's successor is unexplainable. Dodge eventually came around, though, allowing SRT's engineers to build yet another affordable compact car that will blow the doors off half the sports cars on the road. Like the previous Neon SRT4 sedan, the Caliber SRT4 uses a turbocharged and intercooled 2.4-liter four-cylinder with an aluminum block and heads. It's an all-new engine that adds dual counterrotating balance shafts and variable valve timing to the spec sheet along with a higher 8.6:1 compression ratio.

Oz Outrage! Australians to See New Camaro First

Before the new Camaro's US release in 2008, Australians will get a sneak peak at the first production models. In fact, the cars will be cruising Australian highways before the year's out. Why do the sons of Dundee get preferential treatment over we Yanks of American persuasion? Blame it on GM's Holden division, which created the General's new rear-drive platform on which the Camaro (and its own Commodore) is based. The company is turning out several hand-built prototypes, which will hit the roads down under by the end of this year. Though the production Camaro will be built in Canada, and won't be out for two years, Yozzie and the gang may wind up next to one at a stoplight in Sydney, Brisbane or Port Macquarie (or somewhere else even). Spy photogs, get thee to the Quantas desk. [Thanks to Dave for the tip.] – Mike Spinelli
