Carbon-ceramic brakes on their way down to the peons

The sight of a race car streaking into the darkness, brakes aglow as it slows for the next corner, is one of those incredible images that just sticks with you. Those massive carbon-ceramic rotors can take a lot of abuse and their light weight and durability have made them a racing staple for more than 15 years now. Street cars, on the other hand, have been slow to adopt the technology. Although their superior performance is unquestionable, the high cost of carbon-ceramic brakes has made them pretty much exclusive to exotics and supercars.Porsche was the first to use them on a street car when they fitted them to the "widowmaker" GT2. Soon after, they found their way onto the "regular" 911 Turbo as well. Now you can get carbon-ceramics on any Ferrari, most Lambos and Porsches, the Bentley Conti GT Diamond and the Audi RS4.

G. Chambers Williams III: GM not resting on laurels

With its redesigned full-size pickups and SUVs on the road, winning awards and reeling in customers, General Motors is expanding its revitalization into another crucial area: midsize sedans.

The new Chevrolet Silverado pickup, which just went on sale last month, this week was named "Truck of the Year" for 2007 by Motor Trend magazine.

The truck already had been chosen last month by Kelley Blue Book as the "best redesigned vehicle" for 2007.

Its GMC counterpart, the Sierra, also was on the Kelley list as a Top 10 best redesign, along with the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon full-size SUVs, which are built in GM's Texas plant.

Coming next year, after an introduction at the Detroit auto show in January, will be Chevrolet's latest and perhaps best weapon against the best-selling Japanese-brand midsize sedans — the next-generation Malibu.

The Charger Srt-8 Gets A "Factory- Slick Upgrade" From Top Customizers

Andy Warhol came close with his declaration that everyone, in his or her lifetime, would get 15 minutes in the celebrity sun. If TV and tabloids are accurate indicators, certainly any schmuck is capable of an audience under the bright lights - it just may last a little longer than Warhol could have imagined.

Thus we have the Cult of Celebrity Installer, a trend sparked and stoked by shows like Pimp My Ride and Unique Whips, and magazines like the one spanned across your fingers. So we're always impressed when we meet an installer who expends great effort to cover his tracks and make himself invisible to all but the most discriminate and trained eye.

Big 12 Insider: Big 12 has had its moments even in a rough season

The conference has slipped from its lofty perch that was earned with a strong 5-3 bowl showing last season capped by Texas' national championship.

Those triumphs are like yesterday's news. The Big 12 now is marked by its 0-9 record against ranked foes and 3-7 mark against BCS opponents in non-conference games this season.

Perhaps the most telling mark of national disrespect going into this weekend is found in the current Associated Press rankings. Oklahoma, tied for eighth, is the highest ranked team from the Big 12. It's the lowest ranking for the top Big 12 team at this point of the season in the history of the conference.

Controversy has dogged the conference after the Sooners were robbed of a game in Oregon. Missouri lost a game on a phantom holding call against Iowa State that will end up dropping them several places in the bowl pecking order.

Federer the big story of 2006 men's tennis

Player of the year: Roger Federer fell a match short -- losing the French Open final to Rafael Nadal -- of Grand Slam perfection. With 12 titles and a 92-5 match record and failing only to reach one final -- in modern parlance he had a sick year.

Best match: Nadal beat Federer 6-7 (0), 7-6 (5), 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5), saving two match points, in the Italian Open final. Honourable mentions to Andre Agassi's unforgettable 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 7-5 victory over Marcos Baghdatis at the U.S. Open and Dmitry Tursunov's decisive-match 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 17-15 win over Andy Roddick in Davis Cup in September.

Cozy courtside: As his guests at the U.S. Open, Federer had fashion dominatrix Anna Wintour for the semi-finals and golf dominator Tiger Woods for the final.
