Production Dodge Avenger shows up online
Upon first seeing the Dodge Avenger Concept ahead of the Paris Motor Show this year, the first thing we wondered was how this design would translate into a production model. The concept was equal parts flash and production ready pieces, so we couldn't say for certain what the car would look like without the show trim and large wheels. Now we know. A pair of shots showing a preproduction version of the Dodge Avenger was posted by Auto Motor und Sport today, and for the most part the underlying design of the concept car is present. Of course, without the deep front chin spoiler, faux rear air diffuser, deck spoiler and bold five-spoke wheels the production car looks rather tame. The big fender bulges, however, escaped from the cutting room floor in tact. We've said in the past based on our viewing of the Avenger Concept that we liked the styling more than the Chrsyler Sebring, and that's still our stand, however those fender flares are going to make most wheel/tire combos look puny and the upkink in the window line near the C-pillar looks like it will create a sense of claustraphobia for rear seat passengers.
Autos Insider Sneak Peek
Chrysler wants to stretch out the life cycle of its current Dodge Dakota pickup. So the U.S. arm of DaimlerChrysler AG will give the midsize Dakota an extensive face-lift for model year 2008, prior to a full redesign in 2012. The Dodge brand continues to evolve a new family face, with the '08 Dakota drawing styling inspiration, including the brand's signature cross-bar grille from the Nitro and the Charger. Dodge will start building the Dakota in fall 2007. Paul Lienert

Magnum wagon may hide a Hemi
Looking more like a one-off from a California custom shop than a production vehicle, the Dodge Magnum has changed the way we think of station wagons. While wagons have been enjoying a rebirth of sorts, it took the Magnum to make curb standers stop and stare. From the front it looks beefy and powerful; while its profile is tapered and sleek. It's a little bit hearse and a little bit sports sedan. It can serve as a family hauler for those wishing to avoid the stigma of a minivan or the lackluster fuel economy of an SUV, but it can also be nearly as satisfying to pilot as a European performance sedan. If blending in is your goal, look elsewhere. The Magnum will be noticed and so will you. Lead foots beware.

Like Our New Look?
You may have noticed we changed the navigation bar a bit. And hey, the Blog has its own tab! We also added the header with the Ferrari 308--inspired by Magnum PI and the cheesy 80s poster below. We'll probably swap it out with different cars when the mood strikes. Maybe a burning Lambo next time. Or a Donk. But props to Winston for the design. Anyway, we want to hear from you on the new design, so post a comment and let us know what you think.

Bologna Show: Maserati MC12 Corse Debuts
Maserati's answer to the Ferrari Enzo Fxx, the MC12 Corse rolled into the sunlight for the first time at the Bologna auto show yesterday. The severely limited-edition model is based on the MC12 GT1 racer, which took the Spa 24 Hours in 2005 and 2006 and several FIA titles in both years. The Corse model gets a major boost in horsepower over the base model, to 755 hp, from a mere 600 in the MC12. And while its racer cousin gets a manual sequential gearbox, the Corse gets Maserati's electro-hydraulic Cambiocorsa (as well as a passenger seat). The price is the same in all markets, the company says, -- that is 1,000,000 Euros (around $1.3 million). It'll be available (that's a relative term, of course) starting in December 2006, ahead of Wall Street's holiday bonus season in early 2007, followed by All Hoonage Eve, which takes place in Westport, Connecticut around April.
