GERMANY: Audi to invest EUR8.4bn in new models
Audi's supervisory board has approved a total investment package of EUR11.8bn in the company between 2006 and 2011.
Some 71% of this figure, or around EUR8.4bn, will be invested in new Audi vehicles alone, allowing Audi to increase its model range from 22 models at present to 40 by 2015.
From 2007 onwards, investments will rise steadily to around EUR2bn euros a year.
In a statement, Rupert Stadler, board member for finance and acting chairman of the board of management of Audi from January 2007, said: “Investments in new models, in product innovations and core competences are the lifeblood of any company. We can only ensure our corporate success by offering a range of attractive products. This is therefore also an investment in the future of the company and is decisive in safeguarding our jobs."
Audi will be launching several new models or variants next year.
Chrysler Firepower shot down by management
The Chrysler Group's less than stellar performance in 2006 has led to the official decision by management not to produce the Firepower Concept that debuted at the 2005 North American International Auto Show. The Firepower was designed from the ground up, sharing only its 6.1L Hemi V8 with other vehicles in Chrysler's lineup. In order to make a production version that could even hope to return a profit, the automaker would have to build it alongside the Dodge Viper at its Conner Ave. assembly plant in Detroit and charge a price similar to the Viper's $80k+ MSRP. Apparently the business case for such a vehicle just isn't there. We love Chrysler concepts for the simple fact that each one is produced with just enough production intent to take it seriously should public reaction be favorable. Hell, even the ME412 supercar was on the table for a bit.

Like Our New Look?
You may have noticed we changed the navigation bar a bit. And hey, the Blog has its own tab! We also added the header with the Ferrari 308--inspired by Magnum PI and the cheesy 80s poster below. We'll probably swap it out with different cars when the mood strikes. Maybe a burning Lambo next time. Or a Donk. But props to Winston for the design.
Anyway, we want to hear from you on the new design, so post a comment and let us know what you think.
