Utah Police Dog Stays on the Job, Despite Illness
Even the doggie version of chemotherapy can't keep this all-star K-9 on the couch.
In spite of three treatments for a melanoma in his mouth - including surgery to remove the growth and two rounds of injections similar to what humans use to kill cancer - the Salt Lake City Police Department's favorite bloodhound, J.J., remains in action.
J.J. has a career total of 233 apprehensions, the most recent of which came Friday night when officers were called to chase a suspect wanted for aggravated assault.
The suspect rammed an occupied truck twice with his Ford Bronco around 11:47 a.m. and then fled the scene on foot near 200 North and Redwood Road, police said. J.J. quickly found the suspect hiding behind a Dumpster.
"That's what J.J. lives for," said Sgt.
Men scuffle after attempted robbery at Christian store
A robber is on the run after meeting his match at a Christian bookstore in Scottsdale.
The attempted robbery happened at about 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Jesus Chapel Discount Bookstore. The night supervisor, 58-year-old Dan Stanton, said the man told him he had a gun and then reached into the register for the cash. Stanton said something made him snap back because he slammed the register door shut trying to hit the robbers hands. The fight turned into a wrestling match on the floor, knocking over counters and displays. The robber got away, but police said he left fingerprints behind on the register and the door. The robber is described as white, 20 to 30 years old, 6 feet tall, 150 pounds, with "scruffy" facial features. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. His getaway car is an older model, white Ford "Bronco" style SUV.
Grandmom heads to trial in tot's death
The grandmother of a baby who died in a car fire in Westampton is to go on trial this week.
Jury selection is to begin Tuesday in the manslaughter trial of Pamela Dreadin, 45, of Creek Road, Mount Laurel.
She has pleaded innocent to charges of aggravated manslaughter and endangering the welfare of her grandson, Michael Malinowksi Jr., 22 months old. He died in a burning sport utility vehicle in Westampton in 2003 after she went for help and left the boy inside.
The trial prosecutor, assistant Burlington County prosecutor Mark Westfall, declined to comment on the case before Superior Court Judge Patricia LeBon, except to say it will take several weeks.
Previously, county authorities have given the following account of the boy's death:
Dreadin was on drugs when she left her house with the grandson about 3 a.m.
1986 Ford Bronco II 4x4 from North America
I've wanted one of these since high school. Well 11 years later my parents found one where they live. The body is in perfect condition, the interior OK for 20 years old, but under the hood lies a demon of a car. They test drove it and happily paid the $750 for my xmas gift. Then all hell broke loose.
You couldn't drive the truck more than a block and it would choke. A month later my parents towed it 200 miles to me and 3 months later, a million trips to a million different shops/dealers and the truck is literally falling apart. I have already put $2500 into this truck and it probably needs $2500 or more worth of work.
But everytime I get fed up and make up my mind to sell it, I look out the window and fall in love. I love this truck and despite all of its problems, I've been driving it for the last 2 months as is while I save up for a new car.
