WEST COVINA - Basil Winn, 26, of Glendora pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony charges in connection with the death of Linda Schilz, 63, also of Glendora. Winn crashed into Schilz's Ford Contour on Feb. 15 after allegedly running a stop sign while intoxicated. Schilz died of her injuries. He faces charges of felony hit and run, gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing injury and driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08. Winn is due back in court March 13 to set the date for his preliminary hearing. Federal prosecutors are interested in more than City Councilman Edmund Fords connections to lobbyist Joe Cooper. They also want to know about his relationship with Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division, the public utility owned by the city of Memphis. .
Governor orders independent probe of barriers
Governor Christine Gregoire has ordered an independent review of the cable barriers that line major highways. The order comes just ten days after the barriers on a stretch of highway near Marysville failed and led to a fatal crash.The governor now wants to know whether cable barriers are the safest, most effective type of median barrier that can be used. Records show the stretch of I-5 near Marysville has had numerous barrier failures in the past. But the Department of Transportation claims cable barriers proved effect 90 percent of the time in a statewide study. Stan Suchan with the DOT says he believes the barriers are crucial to safety. "Absolutely, absolutely I think cable barriers are a lifesaver," he said. "When I think about it, if I'm in an unfortunate situation out there on the highway and I head for the median and there's a barrier there - I hope it's cable barrier."But not everyone's a believer.
Ford cancers: MP backs call for new probe
MP Chris Huhne has joined grieving families to call for a wider investigation into cancer cases at Ford's Southampton factory. Eastleigh's Liberal Democrat MP today pledged his support for a second inquiry at the Swaythling plant focusing on all forms of cancer. Following Ford's investigation into six cases of oesophageal cancer at the paint shop, Mr Huhne vowed to take on the case of any family who feared the death of their loved one was linked to working in the factory.
Probe urged on Ford billing
Chairman Tom Marshall wants the Memphis City Council to investigate billing practices at Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division in regard to fellow Councilman Edmund Ford.
The chairman's request Tuesday came the same day The Commercial Appeal reported that a federal grand jury had subpoenaed three years of utility billing information for three of Ford's accounts.
