Student from China dies in hit-run crash on I-880

FREMONT — Police are searching for the driver who fled a hit-and-run crash that killed a 22-year-old student from China on Interstate 880 early Saturday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man killed had been staying with relatives in Union City, Fremont Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Neveau said.

The crash occurred at 3:26 a.m. on the southbound I-880 shoulder just past the Warren Avenue offramp, CHP officer J. Hendrix said. The student was sitting in a disabled 1994 Toyota, waiting for assistance after calling for help on his cell phone, Neveau said.

Before help arrived, a 2003 Lexus sport utility vehicle slammed into the Toyota, officers said. The SUV had veered from the road while trying to take the Warren Avenue exit too fast, according to the CHP.

Both cars traveled 350 feet down a drainage ditch between I-880 and Warm Springs Boulevard, the CHP said.

'Lexus' of insulin pens can track patients' doses

Katy Folven never leaves home without her insulin pen, but the busy Boston social worker sometimes forgets to track her daily doses. When that happens, she must prick one of her already-calloused fingertips to measure blood sugar. That can mean as many as 10 punctures a day.

Eli Lilly and Co. has introduced a unique insulin pen that could prevent some punctures. The Indianapolis drug maker's Memoir pen, the first on the market with a memory device, is for use with its top-selling insulin, Humalog.

The battery-operated pen, called the "Lexus'' of insulin pens by one doctor, uses a computer chip to remember the last 16 insulin doses delivered.

Lilly says Memoir could reduce hassles for some of the 21 million Americans who live with diabetes, but others question whether it will catch on.

Mercedes S550 safer and sleeker

Over the river and through the woods, to Grandma's house we went, on a sleigh that costs more than $100,000. It also puts out almost 400 horsepower, and has adjustable seats that will massage your back, expand outward to hold your torso in corners, and blow hot or cool air on your backside depending on climate demands.

But first, let's consider the look of today's test car, the 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550. The German automaker's cars were once Teutonic: square up front, square on the sides, square in the rear. That didn't seem to hurt sales until competitors like BMW, Audi and -- notably -- Lexus started to become sleeker.

So the Mercedes has now been stretched out and given a profile with softer corners. I like it.

Inside the S550, there is so much wood, so much leather, and so much stitching.

Illini basketball player pleads not guilty to accident charges

URBANA, Ill. (AP) — University of Illinois basketball player Jamar Smith pleaded not guilty Friday to felony charges of drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident that left a teammate injured.Smith faces a maximum of 12 years in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted. He entered the plea in Champaign County Circuit Court.Smith, a 19-year-old sophomore guard from Peoria, was driving a Lexus in snowy conditions on Feb. 12 when the car struck a tree. Authorities say Smith and his passenger, teammate Brian Carlwell, had been drinking tequila and beer before the crash.Smith, who is too young to drink legally, had a blood-alcohol level of .176 after the crash, more than twice the legal limit of .08, prosecutors say.Authorities say Smith, who allegedly believed Carlwell was dead, left the accident scene and drove the damaged car back to his apartment, a little more than a mile away in the small town of Savoy.Witnesses reported seeing a tall man wearing University of Illinois sweat pants leave the Lexus in the parking lot and enter the apartment building, with an unconscious Carlwell still in the car, Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz has said.
