| Ford Fusion, Edge Get Top Crash Test Scores
WASHINGTON -- The 2007 Ford Fusion midsize sedan and the 2007 Ford Edge sport utility vehicle received top scores in front- and side-impact crash testing by the insurance industry. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said Monday that the Edge, which has the same underpinnings as the Lincoln MKX, also earned its top rating for rear crash protection.
"The criteria to win Top Safety Pick are tough," said Institute President Adrian Lund. "This award is intended to drive continued safety improvements such as the highest crash test ratings and the rapid addition of electronic stability control as standard equipment. Recognizing the winners also helps consumers distinguish vehicles with the best overall ratings without having to sort through multiple crash test results."

Timing critical for replacing timing belt
Q My 1994 Mazda MX6 LS with a 2.5-litre, six-cylinder engine has gone 91,000 kilometres. Mazda's maintenance bulletin recommends the timing belt be replaced at 60,000-mile intervals for vehicles sold outside California and at 105,000-mile intervals for vehicles sold in California. Why the discrepancy? Vancouver's climate is similar to California's; shouldn't I be able to follow those recommendations? Keith Sjostrom, Vancouver A. California has different, more environmentally friendly emission laws, and some similar-model cars have engines different from those sold elsewhere. Chris Hunt, a lead technician at a Mazda dealership in Ottawa, says the California version of the 1994 2.5-litre engine ran with less compression and produced lower horsepower than its cousin in other states and Canada.
