| Mazda’s CX-7 packs a powerful turbo punch - and a firm ride
On sale since the spring, the CX-7 is not be confused with two smaller wagons sold by Mazda, the 5 compact five-door and the 6 station wagon; the Tribute (a clone of the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner), or the larger, seven-passenger CX-9. The 9, which was to have gone on sale at the end of last month, shares basics with the CX-7. (The Mazda Navajo, derived from the two-door Ford Explorer, is long gone.)
The CX-9 costs about $5,000 more than the CX-7, has a V-6 and is almost 16 inches longer.
Still, it's worth noting if you'll be hauling lots of people and or stuff that the CX-7 is longer and more powerful than its two archrivals, the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
The CX-7 is offered in front- or all-wheel-drive configuration. Prices start at $24,310 with freight for a front-drive version with air conditioning, four-wheel disc brakes with antilock, stability and traction control; front, side and curtain type air bags; variable assist power steering; 18-inch-diameter wheels with all-season tires; cruise control; power windows, mirrors and locks; and automatic transmission.

Former Wimbledon champion and world tennis number one Boris Becker completed his Kingdom of Bahrain tour with a visit to the Bahrain International Circuit and the third day of Formula One testing at the venue.
As the new ambassador of Bahrain's Riffa Views, Becker was taken on a tour of the Sakhir Tower where he witnessed the day's activities before being invited by McLaren-Mercedes for a private tour around the team.
An avid F1 – and McLaren - fan, Becker was thrilled to be given a closer insight into the workings of the team.
"I love Formula One and McLaren is my favourite team," the seven-time Grand Slam winner said. "I've got to know the members well over the last few years so it is great to see them again and to be able to wish them well for the season."
Mother turns in son in carjacking case
SAN DIEGO - A Bay Terraces woman turned in her 18-year-old son for showing up at her house in a stolen Mercedes-Benz, landing him behind bars on suspicion of armed carjacking, authorities said Thursday.Kenneth John Floyd of San Diego was arrested outside his mother's home on Peter Pan Avenue last night, shortly after arriving with a teenage girl in a 2005 Mercedes C240, police reported. On Tuesday night, a gunman commandeered the car from its owner at the Grossmont Center mall in La Mesa, then picked up a young female companion outside a nearby restaurant before fleeing the area, according to investigators.

MB's next major innovation: Vented Taillights?
Back when my whip was a Volvo 740, I ventilated my taillights, too. Actually, it was more like drilling drain holes, but once all the trapped water escaped, you can bet that the compromised seal allowed plenty of air to flow through the lamp. Mercedes has applied intelligent thought to using the taillight as a hidden aerodynamic diffuser on the new C-Class, resulting in a slick Cd of .27. Instead of marring the design with some kind of tacky, nasty lip spoiler on the trunklid, the aerodynamic wunderkinds at MBZ have applied some clever trickery to keep the arse of their newest kostspieliges auto looking slick. A lip spoiler changes the airflow behind the vehicle by interrupting the smooth flow coming over the top of the car. That interruption reduces lift. The problem with a spoiler, is that they require a specific shape to attain their spoiling effect, dictating styling direction.
