Six people are hurt in two weekend crashes

SIX people were taken to hospital as a result of two serious accidents at opposite ends of the county on Saturday.
The crashes near Grange and Tubbercurry also caused major disruption for a period to traffic on two of the countys busiest roads.
The first accident occurred around 1pm at a junction on a straight stretch of the N15 Sligo-Bundoran road about a mile from Grange on the Sligo side.
The accident involved a Mercedes car and a Mitsubishi Pajero jeep, both of which were travelling towards Grange. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
A man and a woman in the car and the male driver of the jeep were all taken to hospital. However, only the woman was admitted and yesterday (Monday) was said to be stable.
The road was blocked for a period as Gardai, two units of Sligo brigade and ambulance crews dealt with the situation.

Man guilty of manslaughter of daughter

A jury in the High Court in Auckland has found a 29-year-old father not guilty of the murder of his nine year old daughter and not guilty of the attempted murder of his younger daughter but guilty of the older girl's manslaughter.

The jury had been asked to decide whether the father deliberately drove his car off the summit of Mt Wellington, an Auckland landmark, in a crash that claimed the life of the nine-year-old daughter.

The father was charged with murdering his daughter and attempting to murder his younger daughter, aged four, when the Mitsubishi Pajero he was driving plunged through a barrier and down a steep slope on Mt Wellington.

Prosecutors argued the accused deliberately drove the car off the summit on August 21, 2005 and had murderous intent when he did so.
