Police catch pair stealing mail

A police officer stopped two Edgewood residents after seeing their car swerve down a street, but instead of a drunken-driving case, he wound up sorting through a bundle of stolen mail. The pair was driving a stolen minivan with a stolen license plate, said Capt. Gary Johnson of the Santa Fe Police Department. The driver, Cherrie R. Krebs, 35, was arrested on charges of receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle and conspiracy to commit a crime. Her passenger, Michael J. Turner, 50, was arrested on a conspiracy charge as well. After a police officer who saw the car swerving down Siler Road at 1:25 a.m. Thursday determined both the vehicle and its license plate had been stolen in Albuquerque, police searched the 2000 Nissan Quest and found the mail, Johnson said. The mail was postmarked recently and addressed to nearby businesses, leading police to think it may have been stolen as recently as Thursday morning, Johnson said.

Canton Nissan rolls out 1 millionth vehicle

As the bright red Titan pickup broke through a banner across the truck assembly line this afternoon at Nissan Motor Co.s Canton plant it also broke a record for workers there.

The truck was Cantons 1 millionth vehicle produced.

"Hitting the million-unit mark is a production milestone," said Dave Boyer, vice president of Canton manufacturing.

The plant plant officially opened May 27, 2003, when the first production vehicle, a Quest minivan, was completed. The 4,000 employee plant hit the mark years sooner than its sister plant in Smyrna Tenn. That plant opened in 1983 with one model and didnt hit the million-vehicle milestone until July 1989.

The number of models the Canton plant makes five within a year of its opening helped it reach the milestone quicker.

Nissan's revamped Quest a standout

I'm here today because I've finally admitted it to myself. It took me awhile to recognize it, but sometime last week, while testing Nissan's Quest, I took a cold, hard look at myself in the vanity mirror and saw what I had become.

"Please continue, Scott. What had you become?"

Well, this is incredibly hard for me to admit, especially in front of strangers ... and especially because I'm an auto writer, which means I'm supposed to like only fast, sexy vehicles and rugged trucks and SUVs. But -- and you've got to understand how hard it is for me to admit this -- I finally realized that I'm ... I'm a minivan-holic.

So now you know. I love minivans. And I'll admit something else: It feels good to get it off my chest.

My fondness for minivans goes back to 1985, shortly after Chrysler introduced them to the world.

Sorry, soccer moms: Minivans are at road's end

I have never owned a minivan, though I think they have a place in our society. A number of manufacturers apparently don't. So many minivans have bitten the dust that it represents a major sea change in the automotive world, and I'm not talking about some of the obscure ones -- anybody else remember the Mitsubishi minivan from 1988? Big, square, tipsy? Didn't think so.

Some of the models that either are gone or will be soon: Ford Freestar, Mercury Monterey, Mazda MPV, Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, Pontiac Montana, Buick Terraza. Reportedly Nissan is unhappy with sales of the Quest: It sold only 31,905 last year, down from a not-much-better 40,357 in 2005.

One of the problems with minivans, for a manufacturer such as Nissan, is that a lot of the company's profit comes from how many vehicles you can build and sell from a minimum of platforms, with a minimum of changes.

Mickelson gets swing vote

The buzz surrounding Wednesday's opening round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship centered on Tiger Woods and his quest for an eighth consecutive PGA Tour victory.

But a close second was Phil Mickelson and his Tuesday session on the practice range with renowned swing guru Butch Harmon.

The meeting took place two days after Lefty failed to protect a one-shot lead on the 72nd hole of the Nissan Open at Riviera Country Club and lost to Charles Howell III on the third playoff hole.

The scene prompted comparisons to Mickelson's meltdown at the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, when he went to the 72nd hole with a one-shot lead and lost by a stroke to Geoff Ogilvy.

Mickelson's longtime ball-striking coach and confidant Rick Smith said he had "zero issues" with the pre-tournament skull session, though it did raise more than a few eyebrows around the tour.
