Family pays tribute to Jo

The family of a young woman who was killed in a road collision in North Herefordshire have described her as a "larger than life character who would light up a room as soon as she walked in".

Joanne Purdy - who was known to friends and family simply as Jo - died on Thursday after her car was involved in a collision on the B4362 near to the village of Bircher. Her Peugeot 106 was in collision with a silver Peugeot 307 at around 5.50pm, leaving both cars with extensive damage. The male driver of the other vehicle sustained shock but was otherwise uninjured.

In a statement, Jo's family said they would remember the 19-year-old's love of life, adding that she would be sorely missed as a beautiful daughter, sister and grand-daughter, as well as someone who touched the lives of all she met.

10-pint crash man banned

VILLAGE newcomer Jack Chapman drunk 10 pints in the Rose and Crown, at Manea, before he crashed into a wall on Saturday night, scattering parts of his car.Police found a wheel trim and bumper of his silver Peugeot 106 at the accident site in East Street - but Chapman had fled the scene. When officers arrived at his home in Jolly Close, they found him wearing a dressing gown and claiming he had been in all night.Chapman, 29, later admitted he had been driving the car when it hit a wall, and he gave a breath test reading more than double the legal alcohol limit.Appearing before Fenland magistrates on Wednesday, he admitted drink-driving, failing to stop after the accident, and failing to report the accident."He collided with the wall, he admits that and apologises profusely," said solicitor Michael Ruck.

Vandals smash up car and roll it over

VANDALS pushed a car over on to its side and smashed a window while it was parked in Old Square, Warwick.

The car's owner had been socialising with friends and returned to his car, a blue Peugeot 106, to find it on its side with the passenger window shattered.

He discovered the damage at about 10.30pm on Sunday.

The owner, who did not want to be named, had been out with friends in the town centre.

He said: "I always go into town on a Sunday night with my mates to chill out and I have parked in the same street for years and never had problems.

4X4s who needs them?

Four-wheel drives have had a bad press recently, and sales are falling slightly. Phil Thane asks is this the end of the off-roader?

IF YOU are a farmer or forester, keeper, ranger or country vet, if you run an outdoor activity centre or sell farm insurance you probably need a four-wheel drive vehicle (FWD or 4x4 ).

But if you really need one, you'll probably have a traditional Land Rover or some other workhorse; those vast, shiny, black and silver things with more curves than Pamela Anderson have never really cut it in the country.

Some have taken to ridiculing them as Chelsea tractors, here we'd have to translate that as Tiger Bay Tank. But if you have a 4x4 you must have your reasons and if you are thinking of getting one then you must believe it's the best option in your circumstances.

Horror at another death on highway

COMMUNITY leaders have united in calling for further safety action on the notorious A530 Middlewich Road in Crewe after another death highlighting its 'horrendous' accident record.

Councillors and council candidates from all political groups have joined forces this week after the tragic death of Sandbach teenager Laura Jenkins.

The 18-year-old's death on the 60mph stretch past Leighton Hospital has left her family devastated and the community reeling with shock after another life claimed on the road they call a 'deathtrap'.

Wistaston Green Labour councillor Tom Dunlop spearheaded a campaign for safety action in 2005, after seven people died on the A530 putting it in the national news.

He said: 'Between 2003 and 2005 there were 400 road casualties overall on the A530 - an average of four a week.

2008 Porsche Cayenne Turbo: Power, Comfort, AWD

Porsche is perhaps better known for its smaller, sportier vehicles, but they have certainly started to make a splash in the market with their performance-oriented SUV. And here is the latest version, the 2008 Porsche Cayenne Tubo. Accompanying that lovely badge on the front of the vehicle is a muscular 4.8L V8 engine that blast out 500 horsepower when you need it, that is, with full engagement of the twin turbos of course. The sound system found within is rather impressive as well. While the head unit is a fairly standard AM/FM/MP3 CD solution, you'll find no fewer than 14 "loudspeakers" embedded within the cabin, ensuring that you will be engulfed in the song stylings of Andrea Bocelli (or Avril Lavigne, if you prefer). Naturally, the Cayenne Turbo boasts all-wheel-drive, as well as front and rear stabilizer bars, air suspension, ABS, 18-inch alloy wheels, 12-way power adjustable front seats, Bi-Xenon headlights, and a refrigerated glove compartment.
