TORCUIL CRICHTON HITS THE ROAD WITH PETER ROBERTS: ROAD WARRIOR
WHATEVER MOTIVATES Peter Roberts, anti-road charging campaigner, it cannot be traffic congestion. The drive from Telford Central train station to his suburban home takes less than 10 minutes, through maybe half a dozen relatively traffic-free roundabouts. "They're going to reduce this to a two-lane road, build 3500 houses and replace the roundabouts with traffic lights," sighs Roberts as he slips his dirty, bronze Peugeot 307 estate into third gear. "They call it sustainable development but whoever's in charge of public transport policy in this country has a lot to learn." There are a lot of "theys" in Peter Roberts's life right now. "They" range from the broad coalition of interests "engineering congestion" on Britain's roads to more specific "theys" that can be identified in context.
Family pays tribute to Jo
The family of a young woman who was killed in a road collision in North Herefordshire have described her as a "larger than life character who would light up a room as soon as she walked in". Joanne Purdy - who was known to friends and family simply as Jo - died on Thursday after her car was involved in a collision on the B4362 near to the village of Bircher. Her Peugeot 106 was in collision with a silver Peugeot 307 at around 5.50pm, leaving both cars with extensive damage. The male driver of the other vehicle sustained shock but was otherwise uninjured. In a statement, Jo's family said they would remember the 19-year-old's love of life, adding that she would be sorely missed as a beautiful daughter, sister and grand-daughter, as well as someone who touched the lives of all she met.
Peugeot Reports Loss as Streiff Initiates Turnaround (Update9)
Feb. 7 (Bloomberg) -- PSA Peugeot Citroen's new chief executive officer, Christian Streiff, said he'll increase earnings and car quality after Europe's second-biggest automaker reported a second-half loss. The net loss was 127 million euros ($165 million), stemming mainly from the writedown in value of car and parts programs, compared with a 348 million-euro profit in the year-earlier period, spokesman Jean-Hugues Duban said. ``They needed to take the charges and are managing the company well,'' said Philippe Houchois, an analyst at JP Morgan in London who has an ``underweight'' rating on the stock. Streiff, a former Airbus SAS chief who took over at Peugeot yesterday, said that his priority will be to boost quality to compete with Toyota Motor Corp.
Criminals come quietly when they see the police's 157mph Evo in ...
AN POLICE car that could be straight out of a James Bond film is making a major impact in tackling Welsh crime. Since South Wales Police bought a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX last year, many criminals who might previously have fancied their chances in a chase, have offered no resistance and pulled over to the side of the road. The Japanese manufacturer's flagship sports car, which retails for around £35,000, has a maximum speed of 157mph and accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds. It is the latest in the "Evo" series started in 1992. The IX was launched at the New York International Auto Show in 2005. South Wales Police decided it would provide a vital tool in the force's crime fighting strategy. The force is among the first in the UK to acquire one. Sergeant Paul Standing, who runs the car's team, said, "It's a fantastic car that's already helped us catch a lot of criminals.
