NSSCC: Double for David

Tees race ace David Botterill was proudly clutching two trophies to commemorate a rollercoaster season this week - and he fully intends to still have them this time next year.

Botterill, from Ingleby Barwick, sensationally clinched a hotly-contested Northern Saloon and Sports Car Championship class B title despite early season mechanical woes and having to invest in a new car after writing his off in a frightening 120mph crash.

But, after being presented with his award at the weekend, and also collecting the Evening Gazette Trophy for being the highest placed Cleveland driver in the NSSCC, he vowed to repeat the feat in 2007.

"In the first round at Cadwell Park I had turbo failure, which meant I didn't race," he reflected at Darlington and District MC's presentation night at the King's Head Hotel.

FiREBALL FUN

J Sanchez doesn't recall exactly when the bug bit, but it was likely during his participation in one of the One Lap of America competitions, the slightly sanitized offspring of the original Cannonball Run. You'll recall the Cannonball Run, immortalized in several dreadful movies, was a mad dash from New York to Los Angeles, with the only objective being to get there as soon as possible.

In 1984, Cannonball Run founder Brock Yates, an editor for Car and Driver magazine, morphed his creation into a more leisurely competition, where participants are at least encouraged to obey the speed limit. Yates created the One Lap of America, where participants would, in the case of the 1985 event, leave Detroit one morning and return to Detroit 11 days later, having driven on a secret route to California, Texas, Florida, New York, then back to Michigan.

Fresh from the Windy City

CHICAGO -- The theme of the 2007 Chicago Auto Show was not trucks, SUVs, small cars, or the return of the muscle car. It was more about diversity of product -- from age appeal to driving needs and environmental sensibilities, the approaches taken by manufacturers also were diverse. Some looked to revive old brands, while others tweaked already successful products.

Here are some trends and notable cars from this year's show, which ends today :

The Ford Taurus is back, and so is the Mercury Sable, along with a crossover, the Ford Taurus X. The names will replace those attached to the Five Hundred sedan, Mercury Montego sedan, and Ford Freestyle crossover. Some critics have called this simple rebadging, but it is not that simple. Yes, the company is bringing back old names it now says it should never have abandoned and is putting them on cars already being built.
