Despite the fact that Porsche is the new majority shareholder of the Volkswagen Group, Audi continues to pursue an ambitious sports car strategy. In addition to the just-introduced R8, Audi is now looking at two additional mid-engine R models. While a proposed R6, aimed squarely at the Porsche Cayman, has been put on the back burner for being "politically incorrect at this point in time" (in the words of one insider), the smaller R4 has just entered the initial evaluation phase. .
Porsche Cars North America Reports 13 Percent January Sales ...
ATLANTA--Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne SUVs in the United States and Canada, today announced January sales of 119 new cars compared to sales of 105 for the same period last year. This represents a double digit increase of 13 percent for the month. Demand for Porsche's current Cayenne picked up speed following the premier of the new 2008 Cayenne at last month's North American International Auto Show. Sales of the Cayenne in January were up 57 percent compared to last year. Also notable for January was the continued momentum of the 911 series that recorded sales of 34 for the month, an increase of 48 percent. Boxster/Cayman sales totaled 30 for the month, compared to January 2006 with sales of 47, a result that benefited from the highly anticipated premiere of the Cayman series.

Porsche Cars North America is getting really racy for the 2007 Chicago Auto Show, where the automaker's stand in McCormick Place will feature an all-out racecar as well as the second generation Porsche Cayenne sport utility vehicle, which for the 2008 model year will be available with as much as 500 horsepower and with new dynamic technologies that allow the vehicle that put the "sport" into sport utility to perform like a nimble sports sedan while being fully capable of carrying five people, towing a trailer and blazing over unpaved terrain and through inclement weather. The Porsche display also will feature the full lineup of 2007 Porsche models, including the Boxster, Cayman, and 911, and featuring the new 911 Targa 4, Targa 4S and 911 GT3.
Porsche Joins Protest Against European Emissions Cap
Berlin, Germany (AHN) - Porsche AG is joining other luxury car makers to rally against the implementation of the mandatory European Union cap on carbon-dioxide emissions. Chief Executive Officer Wendelin Wiedeking says the limit is only beneficial to companies making smaller cars like the Renault SA and Fiat SpA. "This is a business war in Europe," Wiedeking, 54, told shareholders. "It's the French and Italians up against the Germans." The European Commission will soon submit an outline of a preliminary plan to implement the changes. However, carmakers with limited emission models, such as Renault, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Turin and Fiat all stand to benefit from the new legislation. It's estimated that car makers will have to spend an additional $3,297 per vehicle to fulfill the proposed mandatory cap.
Porsche First-Half Net Surges on Stake in Volkswagen (Update6)
Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Porsche AG, the maker of the 911 Carrera sports car, said first-half profit surged because of a revaluation and hedges on its stake in Volkswagen AG. Net income in the six months through January rose to 1.05 billion euros ($1.36 billion) from 169.8 million euros a year earlier, Stuttgart, Germany-based Porsche said in a statement on the DGAP newswire. Sales fell 2.9 percent to 3.02 billion euros. Chief Executive Officer Wendelin Wiedeking expects lower production costs to lead to operating profit of 5.1 billion euros by 2008 at Volkswagen, Europe's largest carmaker, boosting Porsche's earnings from its 27.4 percent stake. Contributions from Volkswagen will offset stagnating sales for the next two years as Porsche develops a four-door car and demand for the Cayenne sport-utility vehicle falls.
