| Hearing set today in carjackings, robberies
A 44-year-old man arrested after a short freeway chase in Spring Valley last month is suspected of two carjackings and six commercial robberies countywide, authorities said. At a preliminary hearing today in San Diego Superior Court, Michael Todd Divittorio also faces charges of drug possession and evading peace officers, said sheriff's Sgt. Rick Persichilli, a spokesman for the San Diego County Regional Auto Theft Task Force. Divittorio is suspected of using a handgun during each of the robberies and carjackings, Persichilli said. The crime spree began with a robbery Dec. 17 in San Marcos and ended with Divittorio's arrest Jan. 12. It included two other robberies in San Marcos, and one robbery each in Carlsbad, La Mesa and El Cajon. Divittorio also is suspected of carjacking a Toyota Rav4 in Bonita on Jan.
First eBox Delivered to Tom Hanks
AC Propulsion has delivered the first eBox customer car to Tom Hanks. The actor and producer, a veteran EV driver, ordered his eBox after driving the first prototype last July. "I still have a Toyota RAV4 EV and never spent a penny on gasoline for it", said Hanks, "What AC Propulsion is doing is fantastic. I drove their tzero electric sports car a few years ago, so when they put the same technology in a four-door I wanted one for myself. It has double the range, goes fast, uses Li Ion batteries, and is incredibly roomy and comfortable. Oh, and I will also never have to put any gasoline into it!"
Testimony in Week 2 of Avery trial shifts to evidence collection
CHILTON � Prosecutors began their case against Steven Avery by telling a Manitowoc County jury a story about a 25-year-old photographer's disappearance in 2005. They talked about what Teresa Halbach's friends and family did when she didn't return to her St. John farmhouse. But last week, the second week of testimony in Avery's homicide case, prosecutors shifted away from their narrative. They began to focus on the details of what investigators found when they began searching Avery's property after Halbach's sport utility vehicle was discovered among the scrap heaps at Avery's Auto Salvage. Jurors also heard from a DNA expert who found Avery's DNA and Halbach's DNA in blood inside Halbach's Toyota Rav4, as well as Avery's DNA on the Toyota key recovered by investigators from his bedroom.
Nissan's Rogue element
The Japanese automaker introduced its contender and newest product, the Rogue compact crossover, at the Detroit auto show last month. Designed to compete against the popular Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, the Rogue will enter a new market segment for Nissan when it goes on sale in September. Nissan has never had a compact crossover. That's not to say the automaker hasn't competed against the CR-V, RAV4 and other compact crossovers, such as the Ford Escape, Chevrolet Equinox and Mitsubishi Outlander. The compact Nissan Xterra, a truck-based true sport utility, has offered consumers an alternative to the crossovers in the small SUV segment. But the Xterra, with its awesome off-road capabilities and rugged good looks, has been favoured more by people who use their vehicles for trail-driving than by those who want a small family vehicle to drive to work, go shopping and take kids to soccer games.
Toyota expansion rumoured
Rumours are swirling in automotive industry circles that Woodstock's Toyota plant may soon announce an expansion and manufacture a second vehicle. Some automotive industry officials believe the plant may double in size and a new vehicle added by 2010, joining the RAV4 which will roll off the assembly line in 2008. "If Toyota is looking for a solution in the short term, there is no better option than Woodstock," said one automotive industry official, declining to be identified. The future of the Japanese automotive giant in Canada was the talk of the recent Canadian International Auto Show media preview in Toronto, with news from a J.D. Power automotive conference the automaker is looking to soon add two plants in North America. That drew a response from Stephen Beatty, managing director for Toyota Canada, that such reports "bodes well" for Canada.
